Little Highertown, Tavistock

Project Overview

A new country home in the heart of West Devon. Proposals are for a highly sustainable timber framed replacement dwelling in Grenofen near Tavistock. The L shaped plan is orientated around a south facing, vernacular clad courtyard of timber and natural stone. The two gabled wings respond to a generous wilded plot with swim pond that greatly increases the biodiversity on site.

The design strongly references local vernacular building methodologies in a contemporary way. Use of local and sustainable materials and techniques ensure a seamless relationship between the building and its rural setting. The proposed mass is lower than the existing bungalow, working with site constraints to reduce operational carbon thought solar gain while managing wider landscape impact in its orientation.

This project has ambitious aims in terms of sustainability in line with the M5 policy and the RIBA 2030 roadmap, and through collaborative engagement, we have been able to achieve a 24.8 year payback.
